South London is the informally defined southern part of London, England, south of the River Thames, which broadly consists of the boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton, and Wandsworth. Originally it began at Southwark at the at the southern end of London Bridge, the first permanent crossing over the river, with early development of the area being a direct result of the existence and location of the bridge. Subsequent bridges encouraged the growth towards south-west but only Tower Bridge was built to the east of London Bridge, hence south-east grew at a slower pace.
